At the turn of the century, Sweet Caporal commonly inserted freebies in each pack of cigarettes they produced. They were known as “premiums,” or come-ons to induce people to buy their smokes, much like prizes in cereal today. Sweet Caporal distributed a number of different celluloid pins between 1900 and 1920; these are examples of one of their more popular button series—“flirting” buttons. Presumably, these would have been worn by male bar patrons as a conversation starter, though in 1905 they probably found the supply of unaccompanied women in bars insufficient, regardless of how sparkling their wit was. No matter, for we have reconstituted these pins as modern cufflinks, mounted in fine silver bezel cups and soldered to sterling silver T-posts. Flirt away, fella!
