And when the boys ask your advice 'bout what cigar to use, just tell them that BILL DUGAN is the one you always choose.
—from a 1903 newspaper advertisement.
Bill Dugan (“the best 5 cent cigar that can be made”) gave away these pinbacks over 100 years ago, despite their insistence that they “offer no premiums or prizes to induce people to smoke their cigar.” Oh well, it just goes to show how flexible the art of lying writing advertising copy is. (Dugan, like many of the hundreds of cigar brands in business around 1900, is now defunct.) The Dugans are, in our opinion, among the most colorful and attractive pins from the era—regardless of one's feelings about the smokeability of nickel cigars. We have set them in fine silver bezels soldered to our custom-designed, sturdy one-piece sterling silver cufflink post. These links are a terrific and unique gift for a cigar smoker!
