Civil War buffs: these cufflinks are for you! This pair is made from brass cuff buttons worn by soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War. These buttons, like most of those worn by the U.S. military during the 19th century, were made by the Waterbury Button Company of Connecticut. (The company also sold buttons to the Confederate Army through European intermediaries.) The buttons are soldered to gold-filled T-posts and then plated with 24K gold vermeil. These look exceptional with formal wear but are fine for everyday as well.
